Horror and fear
Scary scenes, jump scares, horror and supernatural themes.
A content label, not a money rating. We read it from each game's official age-rating descriptors and show the strongest level any board gives.
What it covers
Content that frightens or disturbs: dark places and monsters, jump scares, horror imagery, the supernatural, and sustained dread.
How the rating boards label it
Australia's Classification Board uses 'horror themes' and 'supernatural themes' at every strength from 'Very mild' at G, and 'Horror violence' from M.
PEGI shows Fear at PEGI 7 for pictures or sounds that may frighten young children, Horror at 12 for moderate horror sequences or disturbing images, and intense, sustained horror at 16.
The ESRB has no horror descriptor: frightening content shows up through its violence, blood and gore descriptors.
Mild, moderate and strong
Mild: moments that may scare young children (PEGI 7 Fear, ACB G or PG horror or supernatural themes).
Moderate: horror sequences or disturbing images (PEGI 12 or 16, ACB M).
Strong: intense, sustained horror (ACB MA 15+ or R 18+, PEGI 18).
