Gran Turismo 7
Released 4 March 2022 Developer Polyphony Digital Publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment
A realistic driving game in which you collect cars, tune them and race them on real and imagined tracks. A single-player career takes you through licence tests, events and café 'menu books', and there are online lobbies and daily races for racing other people. It is aimed at car fans of most ages who like precise handling and a long collecting game.
How it makes money
Caution: built to push spending
Gran Turismo 7 costs A$124.95 for the PS4 and PS5 versions (A$109.95 for PS4 only; a Digital Deluxe Edition is A$154.95) and also sells in-game credits for real money, from 100,000 Cr for A$3.75 up to 5,000,000 Cr for A$44.95. Credits buy cars, some of which cost millions, and at launch players and critics complained that earning credits by racing was slow, which makes the shop tempting. Polyphony apologised in March 2022 and promised fairer progression. A PS5-only Power Pack (A$44.95) adds 50 races and 5,000,000 Cr, while the 'Spec' updates that add cars and tracks are free.
How you pay
- Editions
The 25th Anniversary Digital Deluxe Edition is A$154.95 and adds extra credits, a special Toyota GR Yaris, 30 avatars and the soundtrack to the A$124.95 standard edition.
minor part of the game - Paid DLC
The PS5-only Power Pack (A$44.95, from the December 2025 'Spec III' update) adds 50 races, 24-hour endurance racing and the Gran Turismo Sophy 3.0 AI, and includes 5,000,000 Cr. The Spec III update itself is free.
minor part of the game - Pay once
A$124.95 for the PS4 and PS5 versions or A$109.95 for PS4 only on the Australian PlayStation Store (regular prices on 22 October 2026). Both include 750,000 Cr.
Techniques it uses to keep you paying or playing
- Made scarce
Cars cost credits, often in the millions, and critics said earning them by racing was slow (Polygon: desirable cars stay out of reach 'long into the game'). Players said later updates reduced payouts and added grind; Polyphony apologised in March 2022 and gave early buyers 1,000,000 Cr.
- Game currency
Credits (Cr) are earned by racing and can also be bought: 100,000 Cr A$3.75, 250,000 Cr A$7.55, 750,000 Cr A$14.95, 2,000,000 Cr A$29.95 and 5,000,000 Cr A$44.95. A 'Top-up on PlayStation Store' shortcut sits next to the credit balance.
- Always online
The single-player career needs an internet connection and a PSN account to save progress; only Arcade mode works offline. A 2022 maintenance outage of about 30 hours left players with offline modes only.
minor part of the game - Daily pressure
Driving about 26.2 miles a day earns a Daily Workout roulette ticket, and holiday login campaigns give a reward on each of up to five days; tickets expire after a month.

What the critics said
-
9/ 10
Push Square
Called it a labour of love that celebrates car culture, praising the driving, the big single-player campaign and the DualSense feedback, and noting a slow menu and some random prize elements.
-
8.8/ 10
Game Informer
Found it still an excellent driving simulator with precise handling and a car-collecting career, but felt rivals have caught up, citing an unreliable drive-line assist, no damage modelling and slow multiplayer.

Ars Technica
Praised the licence tests but disliked the game's monetisation and its attempts to tempt players into buying credits.

Who can talk to your child, and what can they buy?
- Text chat
- Players can interact with strangers
- Contains user-made content (not pre-checked by the developer)
- Needs an online account
Online lobbies and races (up to 20 players with PS Plus) put your child with strangers. Text chat in lobbies and races can be switched off under Options > Global > Chat Function, individual players can be muted and reporting a message mutes that player (update 1.19, 2022). I found no built-in voice chat; players use PlayStation party chat. Showcase lets players share liveries, decals and photos with the community, and decals can be uploaded from the Gran Turismo website, so some content is made by other players.
