Limited-time offers and FOMO
If you don't buy or play it before the timer runs out, it's gone.
A countdown makes you decide now: buy, or lose the chance for good.
What you're actually buying
The right to get an item, character or reward before it disappears. What you're really buying is relief from the fear of missing out.
How it works
The deadline is the product, not the reward. Gacha banners (limited-time featured-character offers) vanish after a few days. Battle passes expire after a season, and challenges are tuned to get you logging in before expiry. Live events turn the game into a calendar. The effect is to move the decision away from 'do I want this?' towards 'can I afford to miss it?'. It is fear of missing out (FOMO) built into the game's schedule.
When it's fine
Occasional seasonal events where what you miss is small and cosmetic, and nothing you need depends on being there at a set time.
Where it came from
Time-limited banners are part of how gacha games maximise spend. Fortnite's first battle pass (December 2017) made the deadline itself the product: it ran about ten weeks, with daily and weekly challenges, and lost you what you had paid for if you didn't finish. Live-service Fortnite then turned into a calendar: the Travis Scott concert (23 to 25 April 2020) drew 27.7 million unique players across five shows.
Rules and regulation
PEGI, Europe's age-rating system, added a 'time-limited offers' descriptor in 2026 that can raise a game's age rating, and Germany's USK has listed countdown timers as a reason for 'increased purchase incentives' since 2023.
Historical prices and revenues are in US dollars at the time unless marked A$.
By the numbers
Fortnite's first battle pass (December 2017) gave about ten weeks to grind through tiers or lose what you paid for.
Fortnite's 'Astronomical' Travis Scott concert (23 to 25 April 2020) drew 27.7 million unique players across all five shows.
